Emlen
An Original Story

A good writer knows that all fiction is inspired by those around us. Well, many of my stories you may notice are focused on actual people in the real world, as well as adding some original characters. However, writer's do not generally write fiction using real people, since it is considered foolish. But despite this dismal outlook on such story-telling, I have gathered the courage to tackle such an obstacle, and in a unique way I must admit.

Emlen is centered around five main characters, four of which are real people, and the fifth is an original character, whom I have already written about. Throughout the story, I try to display each and every person's qualities in the setting they have been placed in, but still keeping it believable for the reader. While I do tamper some with a real person's true outlook, I do my best to hold true to their individuality.

While I describe each character's point in the story, I do try to make finer points as well. For example, you will notice that I have included my personal hero, Brandon Miller, and with him in the story, I'm presenting his attributes to show the reader just why I admire him as I do. The same goes for the other characters as well, as I demonstrate not only their obvious skill in real life, but just who they are to me.

Just as I exhibit the characters' real attributes, I also add new "skills" to them if you will. Using Brandon again, even though he's obviously both physically, and mentally strong, I've always envisioned him as someone to stay at one's side. So I've given him a new "ability" with using weaponry to not only defend himself, but others as well.

Emlen is clearly a fictitious place and time that has never existed, and probably never will. The beginning of the story is sometime in the present, but then the remainder of the story is set in the future. You will see that I have a fondness for chivalry and medieval settings too, thus suggesting why I chose the people I did to use in the story.

Please don't think that the only reason I'm writing this is because I'm a teenage girl needing to let off some steam. Granted, the four guys I use are indeed attractive but I am not incorporating them in this for those reasons. I admire them in the most sincere of ways, and this is just my way of showing my appreciation to them.

One other thing that is even more un-typical of this type of fiction is to include the actual writer. Yes, I could not help but place myself in the story, however only briefly just to open up the tale, then once again at the end. Despite this though, I could care less whether or not I'm in it, because I'm simply there to help the original character accomplish something, then the rest is up to them.

You won't have to worry about length either, however I will only publish this one chapter at a time. Emlen is just a short story meant to not only entertain, but teach as well. I hope you can learn about these people I admire and appreciate them more like I have as you read.

The genres I use are the following: action, supernatural, slight humor, tragedy, drama, and angst. There is very, very little romance too, since I really try to avoid it in this sort of fiction. Other than that, I use a couple songs taken from the Playstation 2 game, Final Fantasy X-2.

To conclude, I sincerely hope that you enjoy this short piece of work I concaucted over night. It has not only been fun to write and create, but it's been a privilege to write about such amazing people. I hope you can come away with a better understanding of everybody as the story continues. Thank you for your time, now let the story begin!

(Chapter 1::Showtime)

In the hallway, just outside the concert hall, three young women stood. One was a pony-tailed blonde, another with long, reddish brown hair, and the third was a fairly tall woman with striking blue tresses that contrasted with her pale bronze skin tone. In the dark, they whispered their plan before setting out to perform their assigned duties.

"Are we all clear about where we're supposed to be and when?" the brunette asked her other companions who nodded in approval. "Just to make sure, when the show starts, Lily"she looked to the blonde who waited attentively. "will take out the security camera set to focus on the stage."

"Affirmative!" Lily said with a mock salute, followed by a giggle.

"Then Reia, you are to disable the back-up camera." The azure haired woman nodded in affirmation as their leader continued. "If any of you meet with resistence, take 'em out, but I doubt you will. Security's pretty lax."

"You have the dust don't you, Telle?" Lily asked, as the one she addressed signaled back with a pat to her jean pocket. "Then it looks like we're all set! Knock 'em dead up there, girl!"

Shantelle chuckled at Lily's choice of words, brushing them off with a wave of her hand. "I only hope this works, for your sake, Reia. If it doesn't, I hope you at least see him again."

"I am most certain I will by your efforts, Shantelle. As well as yours, Lily." Reia replied in her slightly deeper tone than that of her comrades. "Without you, this wouldn't be happening in the first place. Thank you."

"Anything for a princess." Shantelle said with a familiar smile as she looked behind her to see the people she was performing with in a few minutes walk out of their dressing room.

"Hey! Ya comin', or ya gonna yack all night?" one of them called, who looked quite similar to his companion.

"Be right there, Morgan!" She then turned to her friends once more and grinned confidently. "Best of luck you two. I won't let you down!" And with that, she raced off with her fellow performers, and left Reia and Lily to fulfill their responsibilities.

Taking their places on the platform that would steadily rise upwards to meet the crowd, Shantelle grabbed her headset and slipped it on. "So who were ya talkin' to?" the other man asked her as she smiled mischieviously.

"Well don't you know, Paul? They're my groupies." she replied as he only shook his head at her answer. "But I won't see them for a while, so I was talking to them for a bit."

"Why won't you see them? They going on a trip, or are you without telling us?" Morgan spoke up, swinging his arms a few times to get himself relaxed and loose for the opening act.

She bit her lip without them knowing, and took in a slow, deep breath as the platform began to rise. "I'll tell you later. We've got a show to do."

Up above, lasers shot around the auditorium, electric guitars blared, and luminescent fog lingered atop the stage. The crowd began to cheer excitedly in eager anticipation of the performance at hand, the announcer then taking to his microphone in his booth to declare the opening of the show.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Gold Tour, featuring Olympic medalists, Paul and Morgan Hamm!" The fans cheered louder, clapping and whistling above the blasting music. "Are you ready for the show of a lifetime?"

"YEAH!" the crowd shouted enthusiastically.

"Then let me present...Morgan and Paul Hamm!!"

As the platform reached its peak position, the room darkened, then the stage became illuminated, revealing three figures forming a triangular silhouette. Once more, the crowd roared as the music started, adding lyrics in the background.

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

I can't hear you

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

Then the action started as the two men took off immediately in simultaneous back-handsprings, aweing the audience in an erruption of loud cheers. All the while, their singer began to steal the show.

Far beyond the hazy borders

Of my heart

I can see a place

That's something like this

Every now and then

I don't know what to do

Still I know that I

Can never go back

But those things I've seen

In those hazy dreams

Can't be better than what I'm seein' now

Meanwhile, Lily had already accomplished her task of disabling the central security camera by simply cutting the wires. But she was soon surprised by an angry security guard who glared at her, and she smiled innocently, giving her ample time to nail him in the nose and knock him out.

Everything's so different

That it brings me to my knees

Morgan and Paul then took to performing their favorite flare routine in syncopation with the song, all the while the crowd loving it immensely. Right leg up, left leg down, and spin around!

And though I know

The world of real emotion has surrounded me

I won't give into it now

I know that forward is the only way

My heart can go

I hear your voice calling out to me

"You'll never be alone"

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

What can I do for you?

In mid-swing, Paul pressed himself up to a handstand, while his brother did the same, and then they flung themselves backward into another crowd-screaming handspring. Using their momentum gained from that crowd favorite, they joined Shantelle in performing her choreography.

I can't hear you

The fans screamed in excitement at the moves all three were performing as one, twirling, twisting, and tapping the entire time.

And if I find the real world of emotion

Has surrounded me

And I can't go on

But you are there the moment

That I close my eyes and concentrate

We are all there together

I'll never be...

Though Lily was successful in completing her responsibility almost immediately after the show began, Reia was dealing with her own form of trouble. Rioting fans had begun to crowd her, preventing her from taking out her own camera. Finally getting fed up with their extreme behavior, Reia climbed up on the railing, threw herself up above the crowd and tossed a razor disk at the camera just a few yards away. Luckily, her aim was dead on and the wires were easily sliced in half, while she simply glided back down near the stage, away from the rabid fans.

And though I know

The world of real emotion has surrounded me

I won't give into it now

I know that forward is the only way

My heart can go

I hear your voice calling out to me

"You'll never be alone"

What can I do for you?

As the song neared its end, Shantelle used her quick chance to reach into her pockets and pull out the small packets of dust Reia had given her before the show. In just a moment, everything from then on would change, and it would all be up to those who were behind her.

I can't hear you

She threw it back. It fell onto them just as the song reached its ending point.

I can't hear you

Then they heard the crowd roar for the last time.
